About Me

Greetings and welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  This will be my 26th year teaching at the high school in Cold Lake.  I attended the University of Alberta and Lethbridge and was hired right out of university in 1992 by principal Rod Soholt.  I was hired to teach social studies among other subjects and to coach the Royals Football Team.  I coached the Royals from 1992 until 2002.  The Royals teams I was involved with finished with a 67 win 13 loss record, reaching the Tier III Provincial North Championship 6 times and winning two Wheatland Football League Championships.  I was awarded the Novice Football Coach of the Year by Football Alberta after the 1992 season. I also coached one season at LCI in Lethbridge, winning a Tier I Provincial Championship and at Harry Ainley in Edmonton under legendary Bryan Anderson.  I have coached for the Edmonton Eskimos Developmental Camps, the University of Alberta developmental camps and been a guest coach at numerous high school and bantam programs.  I stepped away from coaching when I got married and started a family.

On the academic side of the profession, I worked for 13 years for Alberta Education working on the Social Studies 33 and 30-2 Provincial Diploma exams in the capacity of a marker, group leader and standards confirmer.  I have participated in a half dozen diploma exam item writing sessions constructing questions for both the SS30-1 and 30-2 exams.  I have also co-authored four Alberta high school social studies textbooks for Oxford University Press.  The four books are Perspectives on Globalization, Living in a Globalizing World, Perspectives on Nationalism and Understandings of Ideologies.  I have been nominated for the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award, the Governor General's Award for Teaching History and in 2007, was awarded the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching.  My areas of focus are the Eastern Front of the Second World War with a specialization in Stalingrad and Kursk, National Socialism in Germany, the Holocaust/Shoah, and recently, economic inequality as outined by Thomas Piketty, Anthony Atkinson and Joseph Stiglitz.  A secondary area of focus are other twentieth century conflicts and socialism in Cuba.

I am a part time jazz drummer (I was a member of the National Honour Band in grade 12), an avid video gamer (PS4), a home theatre nut,  and an ardent lifelong Seahawks fan!
