Wednesday evening ... basketball .... St.Paul ... CLHS Gymnasium! With the Lions in town, local basketball fans had a great opportunity to enjoy the sport. The girls took to the court first, both teams playing hard. The Lions were able to keep the Royals on the outside of the key, keeping shooting percentages low. Able to pick up a few rebounds and shoot in tight, the Lions won 43-35. The boys teams provided a high intensity, action-filled, aggressive and superb basketball. Close at the end of the first quarter, the Royals stated to build a lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Royals had the Lions in their grip, completing the victory with a score of 50-30. Both girls and boys head out to Athabasca to compete in tournament play this weekend! (See Photo Gallery).
Two Cold Lake teams met on the court of Ecole Notre Dame School, Saturday evening at 6:00PM to play the A Finals. Players on both teams were nervous and determined. After the 1st quarter, the Royals led 8-6, with the Crusaders in close and working hard. At the 1/2 the Royals moved ahead 18-10. Needless to say the second half was a struggle, with all girls working to their limit. Led by high scoring Carmen Hamel (19 points), the Royals pulled ahead to stay, earning gold medals, with a final score of 40-22. Special thank yous to the Royals fans for coming to Bonnyville on a most chilly day! Congratulations to each Royal for your endless effort all weekend!
Following the football banquet, parents, players, coaches, guests and Royal football fans headed to the Royal Theatre for an evening of presentations, great video and celebration. The Bantam Awards were first presented, with Elijah Brown earning the team MVP! Daniel Delorme earned recognition as the Top Offensive Player and Matthew Delorme, the Top Defensive Player for the Bantams. Tumor Balls are always a great hit with the players and coaches - Isaiah and Jordan Brown both earning this distinction. For a full listing of the awards. Special thank yous go to Mr. Kelly Johnson for organizing and hosting the event and to Mrs. Bergquist and football parents for providing a great meal!
